Australian players have a lot of respect for Ricky Ponting. Recently, at MLC 2024, with an Aussie captain and an Australian core, Ricky won the title. Due to various reasons, a few players could opt to decline retentions at their current outfits to join Ricky Ponting in Punjab. Here, we take a look at the list of three Australian cricketers who could decline retention to join Ricky Ponting at Punjab Kings.

1) Travis Head

Sunrisers Hyderabad also has a strong Australian core. The likes of Pat Cummins are at the helm. On current form, Travis Head is a sure retention at SRH.

However, Head could have higher aspirations, including captaincy. Plus, the chance of combining with Ricky Ponting could also be tempting. These reasons could make him want join Punjab Kings.

2) Jake Fraser-McGurk

Jake Fraser-McGurk is one of the Australian cricketers who could decline retention to join Ricky Ponting at Punjab Kings. When a bowler was injured, while many expected Delhi Capitals to sign a bowler as a replacement, they surprised all by signing JFM as the replacement. Surely, Ricky Ponting would have had a say.

Now, he is on the verge of retention because of his talent and young age. However, JFM might want to continue his IPL career under Ricky Ponting. Therefore, he could take the chance of going under the hammer.

3) Mitchell Starc

Surely, if he agrees to play in IPL 2025, KKR will manage to retain him. However, if Starc indeed agrees to play in IPL 2025, he might consider working under Ricky Ponting.

Starc could do even better than he did in IPL 2024. Even for Ricky, having a top pacer whom he knows very well could help him construct his side. Therefore, Starc could decline a retention opportunity at KKR.
