Usually, an ICC event marks the end of the careers of a few cricketers. With the advent of T20 leagues, players retiring after a World Cup is not a surprise. The upcoming 2024 T20 World Cup could also witness a few players retiring at the end of it. On that note, here, we take a look at the list of five popular players who might retire immediately after the 2024 T20 World Cup.
1) Moeen Ali
Moeen Ali has been a fine servant for England, especially in the T20I format. He has already retired from Tests and the upcoming World Cup could also mark the end of his T20I career.
There are plenty of talented young cricketers like Will Jacks who are offering all-round services to the side. Hence, it is hard for Moeen to compete with them considering his age. He might focus on participating in leagues such as the SA20 and MLC to prolong his freelance career.
2) Mohammad Nabi
Mohammad Nabi is one of the popular players who might retire immediately after the 2024 T20 World Cup. Nabi has been a good performer for Afghanistan for a few years now. However, with some good young talents coming through, Nabi could make way.
Nabi is someone who would place Afghanistan cricket ahead of himself. Considering this, it would not be a surprise if he retires from the format. Nevertheless, he is a talented all-rounder and would find a lot of opportunities in many global T20 leagues.
3) David Warner
Warner has already announced retirement from the other formats. He is not in great form in the IPL and that could be a sign of his diminishing returns in the T20 format, as well.
Australia already has many youngsters who are ready to take up Warner’s place in the T20I squad. Warner is someone who would like to explore opportunities across the globe. Therefore, he might decide to retire from the T20I format.
4) Shakib Al Hasan
Shakib Al Hasan is also one of the popular players who might retire immediately after the 2024 T20 World Cup. The relationship between BCB and Shakib has always been tricky to understand.
Nevertheless, age is catching up and Shakib could rather focus on the ODI and the Test formats. Hence, he could make way for some youngsters in the T20I squad. Hence, he is also on this list of cricketers who might retire later this year.
5) Trent Boult
Trent Boult has already expressed his desire to not be included in the mainstream plans of the Kiwi setup across formats. With the T20 World Cup happening in a few months and the next one taking a couple of more years, Boult is likely to hang up his boots in the T20I format.
Boult has many contracts in various T20 leagues across the globe. He needs to be in the best physical shape for this and hence, he could take a call on his international career.
