No.3 is an important role in a batting line-up. Earlier, this slot was reserved for the anchor. Now that the role of an anchor is not used, the No.3 batter is used in an aggressive way to make the best use of the overs between 6 and 10. For instance, the likes of Mitchell Marsh have shown the way in this regard. However, some teams could have an issue. On that note, here, we take a look at the list of three teams which could have a problem with the No.3 batting slot for IPL 2024.
1) Lucknow Super Giants
With KL Rahul likely to move to the middle-order, Quinton de Kock and Devdutt Padikkal are all set to open the batting for LSG in IPL 2024.
This means that one of Deepak Hooda or Ayush Badoni must step in at No.3. Both had a forgettable run last season and have not done much in the recent domestic season. Unless LSG promotes Nicholas Pooran, No.3 could be a problem for them.
2) Punjab Kings
Punjab Kings is one of the teams which could have a problem with the No.3 batting slot for IPL 2024. One of Prabhsimran Singh or Jonny Bairstow must play at No.3.
It is likely that it will be the young Punjab batter who will be demoted. He is someone who can use the powerplay well. With him donning a different role, getting used to it could be hard. PBKS do not have other good options also.
3) Chennai Super Kings
Last season, Ajinkya Rahane did well at No.3. This time, there were reports that Rachin Ravindra would take up the slot. Now that Devon Conway is injured, Rachin could open the batting and Rahane might stay at No.3.
Rahane has had a poor domestic season. He seems to be short on confidence. Also, the opposition bowlers would have now figured out his weaknesses. Hence, he could struggle at No.3.
