It would be the end of a lot of eras after the upcoming 2023 ODI World Cup. While a few teams would take a decision to start the transition, a few cricketers could also initiate this by giving up their role of captaincy. We have quite a few examples of this happening later this year. On that note, here, we take a look at the list of three players who might resign from captaincy right after the 2023 ODI World Cup.
1) Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma‘s form has not been great in recent times. He has also experienced turbulence when it comes to captaincy. The Mumbai cricketer was appointed as a skipper only for the two World Cups. Hence, it is possible that he might step aside in this format, at least, as a skipper.
India already has some fine options in the form of Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah and KL Rahul. Someone like Rishabh Pant will come back soon while Shreyas Iyer is also an option. Hence, Rohit moving aside may not have a big impact.
2) Kane Williamson
Kane Williamson is one of the players who might resign from captaincy right after the 2023 ODI World Cup. Considering his injury record, it might be best if Kane sticks to being a part of the team as a batter alone.
Anyways, the Kiwis have a top replacement in the form of Tom Latham. He has done well in the absence of Kane recently and hence, New Zealand would not have any hiccups in replacing the legend.
3) Shakib Al Hasan
Shakib was not meant to lead the side at the 2023 ODI WC. It was Tamim Iqbal’s decision to step down which made the board convince Shakib to take up the role.
Hence, it may not be a surprise if Shakib resigns from the role soon after the World Cup. It would be interesting to see who will replace him. Litton Das would be one of the contenders.
