No.3 plays an important role in a batting line-up. Earlier, this slot was reserved for the anchor. Now that the role of an anchor has become situation-based, teams are taking an aggressive route while selecting their No.3 batter. Mitchell Marsh and Suryakumar Yadav are the best examples in this regard. On that note, here, we take a look at the list of three players who could be promoted to No.3 for IPL 2024.
1) Nicholas Pooran
Nicholas Pooran, who was recently appointed as the vice-captain of LSG, is on this list. Pooran has played in the top-order before, especially at his junior level.
With KL Rahul likely to play at No.5, it leaves one of Deepak Hooda or Ayush Badoni at No.3. It could be a big ask for them. Hence, Pooran at No.3, with Deepak and KL to follow will be a good idea. Yes, the top-order will be left-handed but that is something the players can handle.
2) Aiden Markram
Aiden Markram is one of the players who could be promoted to No.3 for IPL 2024. Despite being the skipper, he could be at the end of getting dropped from the playing XI. Heinrich Klaasen is a certain started and so is Pat Cummins. Travis Head is likely to open the batting.
Considering Rahul Tripathi is not in the best form, SRH could toy with the idea of Markram at No.3. This way, he could get play more pace and that will suit his strengths. Tripathi could come at No.4 with Klaasen following him.
3) Daryl Mitchell
Ajinkya Rahane is in poor form at the moment. Rachin Ravindra at No.3 will be a big gamble because that means leaving out Moeen Ali.
The other option for CSK would be to have Mitchell at No.3. He can take on both the pacers and the spinners. The likes of Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja and Moeen Ali will form the rest of the batting line-up.
