Babar Azam has announced that has stepped down from captaincy. Now, that will fully close the lid on his captaincy future for Pakistan. He was earlier removed and was re-instated again. Nevertheless, Pakistan can start fresh and they should look for a new leader. On that note, here, we take a look at the list of three players who can replace Babar Azam as Pakistan’s white-ball captain.
1) Mohammad Rizwan
It was a bit surprising that Rizwan was not considered after the debacle in the 2023 ODI World Cup. He is a senior player and has a lot of experience in all the formats.
If Pakistan needs someone non-controversial, they should go for Rizwan. He is a motivated candidate and is always available. He will be the right choice as Babar’s replacement.
2) Fakhar Zaman
Fakhar Zaman is one of the players who can replace Babar Azam as Pakistan’s white-ball captain. He is probably the best white-ball batter on form at the moment in Pakistan. Yes, age might not suit the role but in this transition era, he can be perfect.
Fakhar also has some experience of captaincy at the domestic level. He is a natural leader and is very aggressive, too. All of this could bode well for the team in the future.
3) Shaheen Afridi
While reports state a lot of things about him, there is no doubt that Shaheen is the future of the side. Already a superstar, if he wants captaincy, then it means he really wants to do well and this alone should be enough for Pakistan to step in the right direction.
Shaheen is a quality pacer and will call the shots in the pace department in all three formats. Yes, workload might be an issue but if Australia can do with Pat Cummins, Shaheen, someone younger, can also be a choice.
