There are a lot of discussions happening regarding IPL retentions before the next season. On July 31st, all the owners met to give their feedback to the BCCI. On that note, based on the feedback of some of the owners, here, we take a look at the list of three new retention rules BCCI could adopt before the IPL 2025 Auctions.

1) No cap on retention of foreign cricketers

In the past, the focus was more on retaining Indian cricketers. Hence, there was a cap when it came to the foreign players. However, Kaviya Maran highlighted that different teams are built differently and hence, there should not be any cap for foreign players.

It does make sense because just like Indian names, even foreign players are groomed by the franchises. Hence, we could have this new rule in the coming weeks.

2) An additional slot to retain uncapped cricketers

An additional slot for uncapped players is one of the new retention rules BCCI could adopt before the IPL 2025 Auctions. This has always been a complaint from the franchises. They groom a cricketer and this player realizes his full potential at a different team.

To avoid this, some owners expressed the need for an additional slot to retain uncapped cricketers. It can actually help the cricketers because they could continue their development in the known atmosphere.

3) Five-year contract for the players

Mega Auction every three years defeats the purpose of giving a long rope to cricketers to help them perform well. This is because franchises might feel that these players would anyways play for a different team within the next couple of seasons.

To avoid this, BCCI could take a big call of having a Mega Auction once every 5 years. This will involve handing a 5-year contract to the retained players. Some decisions could surely change based on this aspect.
