3 captaincy choices that KKR may opt for if Shreyas Iyer is ruled out of the IPL

In a shocker of a move for the Kolkata Knight Riders, they may miss the likes of Shreyas Iyer for the upcoming IPL as the reports that have materialized for the time being, suggests that the KKR skipper will be out of action for a staggering 6 months which also jeopardizes his hopes of being a part of the 2023 World Cup.

With their captain out of the equation if the reports are to be believed, they will need someone who can step up in these tough times. Shreyas Iyer was phenomenal with the bat but somehow his shortcomings with the rest of the unit backfired and even before the Knights could get going, they were snuffed out on most of the occasions.

As we approach the IPL and with such a big news to deal with, here are three possible captaincy choices that KKR may try and resort to in trying times like these.

#1 Tim Southee

The experienced Kiwi campaigner has been leading the Blackcaps efficiently and his arrival in the KKR squad last year acted as a blessing in the toughest of times. Thoroughly versed in leading his team in the worst possible conditions, Southee comes with a boatload of expertise and most importantly his fearless attitude makes him the perfect contender for captaincy. Given his impressive spell in the preceding edition of the tournament and his phenomenal spells with the ball of late, he becomes the obvious choice for captaincy.

#2 Sunil Narine

Somewhat of a regular campaigner in the ranks of KKR, Sunil Narine has been playing for KKR for more than a decade now and he knows the team like his very own. He has always been a major support for the Knights and given his recent spells that has seen him shining with the ball in his hands, Sunil Narine is also a forerunner in the race for captaincy if Shreyas Iyer is officially ruled out.

#3 Nitish Rana

This could have been a debatable call, particularly with Lockie Ferguson, Shakib Al Hasan in the side. However, Nitish Rana is an Indian player that allows KKR to operate with their foreign players in a rotational manner. Shakib is not going to be a regular particularly after the arrival of David Wiese in the side. Keeping all the aspects in mind and the domestic giant that Nitish Rana is, he becomes an obvious captaincy choice for KKR.
