In the current era, we are seeing many cricketers halt their playing careers early to take up a role as a coach. Thanks to the emergence of opportunities across the globe, there is also now space for specialist cricket coaches, even if they have not played the game professionally. In the ongoing 2023 ODI World Cup, as well, we have quite a few coaches who are young. In fact, they are younger than the oldest cricketer in the squad, as well. On that note, here, we take a look at two nations in the 2023 ODI WC that have a coach who is younger than the oldest player in the squad.
1) Afghanistan – Hamid Hassan and Mohammad Nabi
Mohammad Nabi has been a long servant of Afghanistan cricket. In probably the last ICC event of his career, Nabi will be hoping to do well for his side and make them win a few matches. The all-rounder has done a lot for this team, off and on the field.
Hamid Hassan was recently appointed as the bowling coach of the side. Interestingly, he is younger than Nabi and not long ago, he was playing for Afghanistan. He was a good bowler for the Afghans. Hamid will want to train the current and future pacers of the squad.
2) Netherlands – Wesley Barresi and Ryan Van Niekerk
Netherlands is one of the nations in the 2023 ODI WC that has a coach who is younger than the oldest player in the squad. It was a surprise when the Netherlands made it to the World Cup. Not many expected them to do that.
Wesley Barresi and Roelof van der Merwe were picked to provide experience to the side. Interestingly, assistant coach Ryan van Niekerk is younger than Wesley. Even Heino Kuhn, who is one of the assistant coaches, is also just one month older than Wesley.
