India and Australia will face off in the finals of the 2023 ODI World Cup. The teams last faced in the summit clash back in 2003. It was a forgettable game for India as they lost heavily to their opponents. This makes us look back at the squad that was present with India then. Here, we take a look at the list of two Indians you might not know were selected in the 2003 ODI World Cup squad.
1) Parthiv Patel was in the 2003 ODI World Cup squad
A young Parthiv Patel was selected in the World Cup squad. India needed a genuine wicketkeeper and having made his debut just a few months ago, the teenage Parthiv was the only option. India went ahead with the Gujarat man.
However, during the event, it was Rahul Dravid who stood behind the stumps for Team India. He did a good job and helped India in getting the right balance. Interestingly, it is a similar situation in the current squad, as well. While Ishan Kishan is present in the team as the genuine wicket-keeper, it is makeshift wicket-keeper KL Rahul who is doing the duties.
2) Sanjay Bangar
Sanjay Bangar is one of the Indians you might not know were selected in the 2003 ODI World Cup squad. The all-rounder was in the Indian Team, as well.
Not many medium-pace bowling all-rounders were available back then. The tournament was happening in South Africa. Hence, a player of this attribute was needed by the team. Therefore, they picked Bangar. However, he did not get to play a lot of games. Also, Bangar could not be in the Indian Team for a long time. He was dropped after a string of poor displays. Later, Bangar became the Head Coach of Team India, although that was only on an interim basis. He currently works as a commentator.
