Having a foreign captain could be risky. However, weighing the pros and cons, if the foreign candidate is the best option available on the table, the franchises could go for it. For instance, in the past, the likes of Shane Warne, Adam Gilchrist, David Warner and Kane Williamson did well as foreign captains. In the recent cycle, despite his age, Faf du Plessis did well for RCB. Hence, a few teams might be inclined towards appointing a foreign captain for IPL 2025. On that note, here, we take a look at the list of two franchises which might have a foreign captain in IPL 2025.
Note: We have assumed that Pat Cummins will remain as the captain of SRH in IPL 2025.
1) Punjab Kings
In the history of IPL, Punjab Kings had many foreign captains. Even in IPL 2024 and before that in IPL 2023, the team was mostly led by Sam Curran. Despite all of this, the team has been unable to do well in the tournament.
Again, there are very few Indian options for Punjab Kings in IPL 2025. They must spend a lot on an Indian name that could come in the auctions. Or else, they could target someone like Aiden Markram, who would be an under-rated choice as a leader.
2) Lucknow Super Giants
LSG is one of the franchises which might have a foreign captain in IPL 2025. As per reports, the franchise is set to release KL Rahul before the next season. If that happens, the team will have to find a new skipper.
For LSG, though, they have a solution already available. Nicholas Pooran was KL’s deputy in IPL 2024. He is also an experienced captain. Pooran will surely be retained because of the value he adds. Hence, it would be a simple option for LSG to appoint Pooran as the new captain.
