Five-time champions Mumbai Indians have become the first team to be eliminated from the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League. MI is the most successful team in the tournament’s history, and since the matches were happening in Mumbai and Pune, most fans thought the Mumbai-based franchise would dominate the season.
However, the inconsistent performances of the big names coupled with injuries and questionable decisions from the team management led to Mumbai Indians losing eight matches on a trot. They snapped their losing streak recently with a win over the Rajasthan Royals. In fact, they are on a two-match winning streak right now, but since RR defeated Punjab Kings today afternoon, MI is eliminated.
Practically, they were out of the race after losing eight consecutive matches. However, there was a mathematical chance, which also became zero today with the Jaipur-based franchise’s victory. Now, even if the Mumbai Indians win all matches, there is no mathematical possibility of the team finishing in the Top 4.
