“Why is he then opening in the T20 World Cup?”, Twitter reacts as Chetan Sharma says that KL Rahul is an important Test player for India

Star Indian opener KL Rahul has been going through a horrid run of form off late in the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia. He suffered an injury at the end of IPL 2022 and missed a considerable number of bilateral series till the series against Zimbabwe. He made his comeback in that series to prepare for the Asia Cup 2022.

He did not have any meaningful contribution in the Asia Cup 2022 until the dead rubber match against Afghanistan, where he scored 60 odd runs. His strike rate was questioned enough by the critics, as they felt he was not showing any intent to take on the bowlers during the powerplay.

Now, during the world cup, he opened for India in all three matches so far. He failed in all of them, and hence fans and experts are raising questions about his place in the playing XI. Some have even asked him to consult a mental conditioning coach as the manner in which he is getting out is a reason to worry.

Today, the selection committee announced the Indian squad for the series against New Zealand and Bangladesh. KL Rahul was not part of the limited-overs squad against New Zealand. He was only part of the Test team and the ODI squad against Bangladesh. So, the fans felt that the Karnataka guy has been dropped from the limited-overs squad.

However, the Chief of the selection committee, Chetan Sharma clarified that KL Rahul has been rested in the limited overs series because he is a very important player for India in Tests.

Chetan Sharma said: “KL Rahul is an important Test player for us, so we’ve rested him in the Limited Overs series against New Zealand.”

Now, it remains to be seen what the future holds for him in the limited-overs setup. However, the Indian fans will definitely want him to fire on all cylinders in the upcoming matches in the ICC World T20 2022 if India wants to have any chance to win the title.
