The former Indian opener Virender Sehwag has picked his top 5 batsmen from the current edition of the IPL and it’s very surprising that he has not included the name of the orange cap holder Shubman Gill in his list.

Not only Gill, Sehwag has not included the name of Virat Kohli in the list either. Virat also scored two back to back centuries in IPL 2023, while Gill has scored 3 centuries in his last 4 games.

Virender Sehwag, who was analysing the performance of different batsmen in IPL 2023 on Cricbuzz, was probably a bit more leaned towards the middle order batsmen while picking his top 5.

The first name that Sehwag picked was that of the KKR middle order batsman Rinku Singh, who generally batted at no. 5 or no. 6 for KKR and there was hardly any game in the whole season where Rinku didn’t deliver the goods. There were a few games where he fell short of the target by a few runs, but he still dragged the game as close as he could.

The second batsman Sehwag picked was a middle order batsman again, this time from Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and it was Shivam Dube. The reason why Sehwag went with Dube was because of his six hitting ability against spin.

Yashasvi Jaiswal was the only opener in the top 5 list of Virender Sehwag

The only opener in Sehwag’s list was not Shubman Gill, but Yashasvi Jaiswal who scored close to 600 runs in the season at a very high strike rate and also scored the fastest fifty ever in the history of the IPL, when he got to 50 in just 13 balls in the game against KKR.

The other two players in Sehwag’s list were Suryakumar Yadav and Heinrich Klaasen. Surya was an obvious pick as he is the best T20 batsman in the world at the moment and Klaasen, in this season, showed tremendous ability to hit boundaries consistently in the middle overs against spinners.
