‘It has to be the highlight of the tournament’-Wasim Jaffer feels that Virat Kohli’s century against Afghanistan was the main event in the Asia Cup 2022

In the 2022 Asia Cup event, India finished in third place after a string of disappointing performances. The defending champions got off to a strong start in the competition by claiming a decisive group stage victory against their fiercest rivals, Pakistan, but their performance in the Super-Four round was below par. India was eliminated from the competition after suffering defeats at the hands of Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Both of them advanced to the championship round, although they were victorious in their last match against Afghanistan.

There were a few things that went well for Team India, who will be trying to make a quick turnaround ahead of the Twenty20 World Cup, which is coming up very soon. The fact that Virat Kohli was in such fantastic form throughout the competition was the greatest bright spot for the Men in Blue. The former captain began the tournament with an important knock of 35 runs against Pakistan in the group stage match, and he finished the competition with an undefeated performance of 122 runs off of 61 balls against Afghanistan.

As an indication that he has returned to his previous level of performance, the 33-year-old hammered two massive fifties while playing in the number three position against Hong Kong and Pakistan (in the Super-Four round). However, his finest innings came in India’s last game of the tournament, which was played against Afghanistan. In the absence of the team’s captain, Rohit Sharma, he started the innings with KL Rahul. After a long absence of 1020 days, Kohli finally recorded his maiden century in international competition, and it came in the form of a Twenty20 International (T20I).

With the assistance of 12 fours and six sixes, Kohli blasted his way to an undefeated 122 runs off of only 61 balls. Many people questioned his methodical approach in the most recent Twenty20 International matches, so his strike rate of 200 was a significant statement to make. The veteran bowler, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, finished the tournament with 11 wickets despite just playing five matches. He got five for four in the same match to finish with that total.

What did Wasim Jaffer say?

But Kohli’s knock was the highlight of the show. Speaking on the BatBricks7 presents Run Ki Runneeti program that aired on CricTracker on Sunday, the former Indian batter Wasim Jaffer revealed that Kohli’s century was the finest memory for him in this Asia Cup competition.

Wasim Jaffer said: “My favourite moment from this tournament was probably when Virat Kohli scored the century. It occurred after a period of almost three years during which time everyone around the globe was discussing it. And we saw the old Kohli, the way he performed, and for me, it has to be the highlight of the tournament.”
