R Ashwin has been in top form in recent years. In 2021, he picked more than 50 wickets in Tests. In the recent Mohali Test, as well, the Tamil Nadu off-spinner produced six scalps. While his domination at home is well-known, he is surprisingly not chosen regularly in the overseas Tests. Ashwin is not being preferred for away Tests
Whenever India tours abroad, there is a subplot if Ashwin would make it to the playing XI. This is mainly regarding the assignments for India in the SENA nations. While the player has got chances abroad, in recent years, he has been kept outside the XI. Against England in 2021, he did not play a single game. If not for Ravindra Jadeja’s injury, Ashwin’s chances might have been limited in South Africa, too.
SENA Nations usually do not need two spinners. Courtesy of his better batting abilities, Ravindra Jadeja has got the chances ahead of Ashwin. Jaddu, on his part, has done well to not give the management a chance to ponder about his place.
Rohit reacts to Ashwin not getting picked for overseas Tests
After the game against Sri Lanka in Mohali, Rohit Sharma was asked about the reason for this. Speaking in the interview, he said, “Really, can’t tell you anything about his overseas place and why doesn’t he find it and why is he is not in the eleven. Obviously, I have no idea as I wasn’t part of the selection at that point and I can’t tell you what happened and why was he left out and why didn’t he play and that kind of stuff.”
India will surely have a few assignments under Rohit Sharma in the SENA Nations. It will be interesting to see if Rohit goes ahead with the previous management’s decision or include Ashwin regularly in the XI.
