Mahmudullah has been overlooked for a spot in Bangladesh‘s Twenty20 team for the 2022 World Twenty20, prompting Sridharan Sriram to draw a comparison between him and MS Dhoni.

Surprisingly, Bangladesh’s most experienced all-rounder Mahmudullah was not selected for the 15-man team that will go to Australia to compete in the next Twenty20 World Cup.

Mushfiqur Rahim, an experienced wicket-keeper batter, announced his retirement from T20 Internationals a few days ago, and as a result, Shakib-Al-Hasan will now head a rather inexperienced side in the competition for the World Championship title in the shortest format.

Bangladesh’s failed to advance to the “Super 4” stage of the Asia Cup 2022, which was just recently completed. Some players from the squad have been left out. These players include Parvez Hossain Emon, Anamul Haque, Mahedi Hasan, and Mohammad Naim.

Positive developments include the return of Nurul Hasan Sohan and Liton Das, who had been sidelined by injury but have already made a full recovery.

Sridharan Sriram, the technical consultant for the Bangladesh Twenty20 team, made the comparison between Mahmudullah and MS Dhoni, the former captain of India’s cricket team, to explain the seasoned batter’s absence from the World Cup roster of 15 players.

Sriram said that Mahmudullah’s job in the squad over all of these years has been that of a finisher. This is something that MS Dhoni was also expected to perform for the Indian Cricket team in the past when batting at no. 6 in the order.

What did Sriram say about Mahmudullah and MS Dhoni?

However, in the Twenty20 format, Sriram believes that the team needs to look beyond Mahmudullah to find someone who can take on the responsibility of filling the big shoes that Mahmudullah, who is 36 years old. In the same way that a well-known finisher like Dhoni cannot provide his services indefinitely, Sriram believes that the team cannot rely on Mahmudullah forever.

“I believe that our cricket team has to have a strategy for the next generation of players. Because Mahmudullah fills a similar function for the team as MS Dhoni does, I have always compared the two. He batted in the sixth spot, the same spot that Dhoni had batted in for India. He was a finisher. Dhoni’s run couldn’t really go on indefinitely, can it?

You really need to have a succession plan in place for who will take over [next]. I believe that now is the appropriate moment to think about someone who is capable of filling the large shoes that Mahmudullah left behind. You are in need of someone. If we don’t start finding players in that position, we’re never going to discover them,” said Sriram.
