Cricket West Indies (CWI) has decided to sack the entire selection panel of the men’s national team, after the team’s poor performance in all formats of the game in recent times. Windies has been struggling in test match cricket away from home for quite a while, but recently they were very poor in the T20 World Cup as well, a format which they seemed to have perfected a few years ago when they won 2 world titles in a space of 4 years.

Some of the selections that were made for the T20 World Cup were very questionable, as the selectors went for ageing players, despite the fact that they had not played a lot of international cricket going into the World Cup and were well past their time. There were question marks on the selection of Chris Gayle and Lendl Simmons, two players who have although served Windies with distinction in T20 cricket but didn’t warrant selection in the World Cup ahead of some youngsters.

Another decision that was very, very surprising was the selection of Ravi Rampaul, who was not really involved with the West Indies T20I team for a long time, but a few decent performances in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) earned him a spot in the World Cup squad, and he was preferred over the former Windies captain Jason Holder who is one of the leading all-rounders in the world at the moment.

Phil Simmons will chair the interim selection panel of West Indies

The selection committee that has been removed from the job was chaired by the former West Indies cricketer Roger Harper. The interim selection panel that has been put in place comprises the head coach Phil Simmons who will also chair the panel and will be making the selections with the red ball captain Kraigg Brathwaite and the white ball captain Kieron Pollard, till the new selectors and a new chairman of the selection committee are appointed.
