Bomb explodes inside stadium during Shpageeza Cricket League in Afghanistan, game resumes after an hour

Generally, security is one of the major issues in premier sporting events around the world these days, but one of the games of the Shpageeza Cricket League in Afghanistan carried on without too much of a delay despite a bomb exploding inside the stadium in the middle of the game.

Shpageeza Cricket League is the premier domestic T20 tournament in Afghanistan and yesterday’s game of the tournament was played at Kabul cricket stadium. One of the teams featuring in the game, named Pamir Zalmi, had already batted and had put a total of 159 on the board.

But, before the other team, Bande-e-Amir could come out to start their innings and pursue the target of 160, a bomb exploded inside the stadium with a decent number of people in attendance the spectators. However, luckily the blast didn’t turn out fatal for anyone and it only caused injuries to a few people who were given medical care.

In such circumstances, the game could have been called off as well, but it wasn’t called off, and only within an hour or so, Band-e-Amir resumes their chase. Since time was lost because of the chaos caused by the blast, the Duckworth-Lewis method was used for the game, a method that is generally used in the game of cricket for rain interruptions.

Bande-e-Amir set a target of 94 runs in 60 balls and they ended up chasing down the score in only 7.1 overs to win the game. Most of the top Afghanistan players are featuring in Shpageeza Cricket League at the moment in their bid to provide themselves some game time before the upcoming Asia Cup which will take place in UAE.

The last time the Asia Cup had taken place in 2018, Afghanistan had pulled off a surprising win against a much-established Sri Lankan team.
