Fuming after India’s triumph in the T20 World Cup match in Adelaide, fans of the Bangladesh and Pakistan cricket teams accused the umpires of favouring the Men in Blue by continuing the contest despite the wet outfield.

Rain forced the suspension of India and Bangladesh’s play. Bangladesh were 66-0 in 7 overs when play was stopped due to Litton Das’s blistering 59 not out off 26 balls, which he laced with seven fours and three sixes for a strike rate of 226.9.

Once play resumed, the remainder of the match was a quick one. As a result, Bangladesh’s revised aim dropped from 185 in 20 overs to 151 in 16 overs. With all wickets in hand, they needed 85 more runs in nine overs to win.

Bangladesh opener Litton Das and Shanto went for a second run on the second ball of the eighth over from R Ashwin, but Das fell while turning for the second run. It was a direct strike from KL Rahul that sent him packing.

As soon as Das left, Bangladesh’s chances of winning diminished, and they eventually lost by 5 runs.

Pakistani supporters were left disappointed by Bangladesh’s loss since a victory would have made things worse for India. If Babar Azam’s team were to overcome South Africa, then Rohit and company would have then been in a bind.

However, after the game, the Bangladeshi captain, Shakib-Al-Hasan restrained himself from using the wet outfield as an excuse. He said that a wet outfield favours the batting team more than the fielding team.

Shakib said: “It was slippery but it suits the batting team more than the bowling team – we won’t make that as an excuse”.
