Sri Lanka thumps the Netherlands by 16 runs to qualify for the Super 12 stage
After an upset against Namibia in their opening game of the T20 World Cup 2022, Sri Lanka produced a magnificent performance to qualify for the Super 12 stage of the tournament. After pounding UAE, they defeated the Netherlands by 12 runs.
Opting to bat first, they went off a shaky start and also lost two quick wickets. But Kusal Mendis played a good part with bat and scored a brilliant 71 to take his side to the fighting total. He was complemented well by Charith Asalanka (31) and Bhanuka Rajapaksa (19) as the Shanaka-led side posted a total of 162 runs on the board.
Defending the target, they started off well with the ball and took quick wickets to leave the Netherlands tumbling at 123/9. But Max ODowd carried his bat throughout the innings and played a staggering inning of unbeaten 71 runs to keep his side in the hunt.
He almost Sri Lanka a scare but in the end, it was the bowlers who held their nerves and bowled well under pressure to bag the match for his side. Wanindu Hasaranga was the pick of the bowlers and returned with the figures of 3/28.
