IPL auction will be held ahead of the IPL season in 2022. Last month, two new teams were officially added to the roster. Franchise owners and think tanks would be working hard behind the scenes, as to which players they will retain. In this article, we look at four players the Sunrisers Hyderabad might retain ahead of the 2022 Auction.

The franchises of Ahmedabad and Lucknow are bought by CVC Capital and RPSG Ventures Ltd., respectively. Due to this, the retention scenarios for the existing franchises are changed. A maximum of three Indian players and two overseas players can be retained by all the existing teams. However, not more than four players can be retained by the eight teams.

SRH management and selection committee will have to make a tough call regarding their overseas retentions. Their list of overseas players includes the likes of Rashid Khan, Jonny Bairstow, Jason Holder, and Mitchell Marsh. Most of them have been in the form of their lives in recent times.

1. Jason Holder

Jason Holder has been in tremendous form in the T20 format. He is a utility player when used as a bowling all-rounder. He is a genuine death bowler who could bowl an over in the powerplay as well. Holder has bagged 30 wickets in 15 matches over the last couple of seasons (averaging two wickets per match). ‘

Moreover, the economy rate at which he bowls has been improving over the past years.
Even though his batting numbers in the IPL aren’t that impressive, he is not shy of clearing the ropes and can play a valuable knock towards the end. Jason Holder could thus be the utility retention for Sunrisers Hyderabad ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction.

2. Mitchell Marsh

Mitchell Marsh has been one of the best players for Australia in the past couple of years. He was vital for Australia in the recently-concluded ICC T20I World Cup in the UAE. Marsh is the third-highest run-scorer in the format in 2021 and the highest scorer for Australia. He usually bats at number 3.
With David Warner highly unlikely to be retained, SRH would need a top-order- batsman in their ranks going into the auction.

Marsh has been very reliable with his bat. He also provides the option of the sixth bowler. Marsh can come in handy if one of the bowlers has a bad day at the office. Sunrisers Hyderabad’s management would surely keep him in mind while taking the final call over retentions ahead of the mega auction.

3. Umran Malik

Umran Malik has been one of the finds in the UAE leg of the IPL. He has not even played much in the Domestic Circuit. In the auction, many teams would like to go for him because of his rare trait. He is a genuine speedster who clocks 150kph at will.

With Bhuvi, Sandeep, and Siddharth Kaul having average seasons at best, the Sunrisers Hyderabad could retain Umran Malik ahead of the 2022 auction.

4. Manish Pandey

Manish Pandey could be the captaincy pick for SRH from the 2022 season. He most recently captained the team in their last group-stage match against Mumbai Indians.

Pandey bats at number four and is quite reliable. He has managed to score at an average of above thirty in five of the last six seasons. Even though Pandey has had to sit on the sidelines for much of the 2021 season, he has scored 292 runs in 8 matches.
