India suffered a five-wicket defeat at the hands of South Africa at the Optus Stadium in Perth. Team India did not have a favourable outing during this game. All the batters failed miserably and only Suryakumar Yadav’s spectacular innings took them to a respectable score.
While India was defending the total, they were in a good position at the end of 10 overs due to the performances of their fast bowlers. However, Virat Kohli’s missed catch and Rohit Sharma’s missed run-out turned the tide in South Africa’s favour. Also, India’s only spinner Ravichandran Ashwin conceded a lot of runs in his four overs, which turned out to be the difference.
While reviewing India’s performance against South Africa, India legend Sunil Gavaskar pointed out the mistakes during the game. He indirectly criticised the bowling spell of Ashwin which turned out to be a difference maker, as India suffered their first loss in the T20 World Cup 2022.
During his interaction on South Africa’s historic victory against Rohit Sharma and the rest of India’s team, batting veteran Sunil Gavaskar highlighted why fielding was not India’s “primary concern” that contributed to the team’s disheartening loss in the World Cup.
Sunil Gavaskar told Aaj Tak: “In cricket, things happen like dropping a catch and missing a run-out chance. We can’t put the loss on just one person. Even the best players can drop catches or miss chances to run out when luck isn’t on their side. When India bowled, I think the biggest problem was that one bowler gave away 43 runs.”
Ravichandran Ashwin gave away 43 runs in his quota of four overs. He did pick up a wicket of Tristan Stubbs, but it was too late by then. David Miller plundered Ashwin for sixes which eased the pressure on South Africa. India will now face Bangladesh in their next game while South Africa will face Netherlands.
