The Chennai Super Kings have been looking for a new captain to take over for MS Dhoni. Before the 2022 season began, they opted for Ravindra Jadeja as captain, but CSK’s lacklustre start meant that Dhoni was called back into action. However, supporters are asking whether he is the rightful successor to the kingdom after the four-time IPL champions signed England all-rounder Ben Stokes for a record INR 16.25 crore during the mini-auction in Kochi on Friday.

CSK, who had previously failed to sign Sam Curran and Jason Holder, finally struck gold on their third attempt when they were able to purchase Stokes, making the England Test captain the third most expensive player at the 2023 IPL auction.

Suresh Raina, a former CSK superstar, told CricketNext that he believes Dhoni would develop Stokes into a future leader and that Stokes may perhaps take over as captain in the 2024 season.

“MS will definitely train Stokes. He won the world championship and helped his team do very well in the T20 World Cup. He also led his team to a win in Pakistan in a Test series. So, he must be feeling good. Also, the young people at the Chennai camp will benefit from his cricket knowledge. The people in Chennai will love him. I just hope he likes “Whistle Podu” and does a lot of it for CSK,” he said.

After spending IPL 2017 together in the Rising Pune Supergiants, Dhoni, Ajinkya Rahane, and Stokes will be able to share a locker room again.

MS Dhoni’s response to the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) acquiring English all-rounder Ben Stokes at the IPL 2023 auction in Kochi on Friday was disclosed by CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan (December 23).

Sam Curran, an English all-rounder, was the most expensive player in IPL history after PBKS paid INR 18.5 crore to acquire his services on Friday despite CSK’s best efforts to re-sign him. Later, during the IPL 2023 auction, CSK battled tooth and nail to get Stokes’ services for INR 16.25 crore.
