India is currently taking on Sri Lanka in the third fixture of their ongoing 3-match ODI series at the Greenfield Stadium, Trivandrum, and the hosts have been in a favorable position so far today. India already have a 2-0 lead in this series and thus, they have already won it practically. However, they now have a chance to totally whitewash the visitors by winning this match and the odds of that happening are very high.
Talking about today’s match, India won the toss and opted to bat first. The partnership between openers Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma did the job today. They scored more than 90 runs together before Rohit Sharma was cleaned up by Chamika Karunaratne. The Indian captain made 42 runs off 49 deliveries. With this, he now has more runs in One Day Internationals than South African legend AB de Villiers, who happens to have a major fan following in India.
Rohit Sharma now has 9595 runs in 231 innings while AB de Villiers had 9577 runs in 218 innings. Although Sharma took more matches than AB de Villiers to get to this position, it is still a very big achievement, as the South African is no less than an icon of the sport. Sadly, many fans are apparently not pleased with this as they did not want Rohit Sharma to overtake their legend in the shorter format.
Coming back to the match, Shubman Gill has looked really sharp so far in this match, He was looking good in the last match at Eden Gardens as well but sadly he had to depart early after playing a number of superb shots. He has been able to hold his composure today though and now he is on the verge of scoring half a ton. These consistent performances will definitely cement Gill’s spot in the playing XI ahead of the 2023 ODI World Cup.
