The 1983 World Cup winner Madan Lal has  named an ideal replacement of Jasprit Bumrah for the World Test Championship Final. He said that fans should leave the pacer out of the equation as his injury is serious and the team should play Umesh Yadav instead of him as at least 3 pacers are needed in overseas conditions.

“They will take Umesh [to WTC final]” Madan Lal on Jasprit Bumrah’s replacement  for the summit clash of the Test championship

Jasprit Bumrah has been out of cricketing action since September 2022. He last played for India in a T20I against Australia and since then has missed all the games that India has played.

Bumrah did the rounds when a fuss was created related to his selection in the ODI series against Sri Lanka. He originally was not named in the ODI series squad for Sri Lanka and then was added to the team as a late addition after the medical team deemed him fit to play.

The pacer complained about stiffness in his back and governing body decided to keep Bumrah fresh for India’s upcoming important assignments. It was expected that he would make a comeback in the Tests against Australia. But he didn’t feature

But this hasn’t been the case as he was not named in the squad for the last two Tests and the ODI series against Australia. The recent reports on the pacer suggest that he will not play in the IPL and the WTC Final, which will be played in June this year in England.

India on the other hand is likely to qualify for the final of the WTC. They need to win the last game against Australia or want New Zealand to beat Sri Lanka in at least one of the two games.

If they manage to qualify, the absence of Jasprit Bumrah will leave a massive void for India, considering the kind of impact he had in English conditions.

With Bumrah likely to be out, Madan Lal feels that India will take Umesh Yadav to England and play him. Speaking on Sports Tak, he said: “They will take Umesh [to WTC final]. There you need at least 3 pacers so, only one spinner might play and the rest will be fast bowlers. Bumrah ko ab bhool jao. Usko chhor dijiye aap (Forget Bumrah. Leave him out of the equation).

“When Bumrah returns, we will see then. Use whatever you have. What is the guarantee? No wonder when he will return – maybe in 1 to 1.5 years. He has not played in so long. It means his injury is very serious.”

“If you want to see the same Bumrah, you will have to give him time,” Madan Lal on the pacer’s availability

Madan Lal future added that even if Bumrah returns early, it will take him time to get his rhythm back. He further elaborated:

“At max, an injury takes 3 months to heal and he hasn’t played since September – even Hardik Pandya was able to return in 4 months post his back surgery – and Bumrah hasn’t played since 6 months. So, how can you expect that this will be the same Bumrah that we have seen so far? It will take him time. If you want to see the same Bumrah, you will have to give him time.”

There’s no official confirmation of when will the pacer return to action. It is learned that he will undergo surgery. Umesh on the other hand has been performing well. He bowled superbly in the last Test against Australia in Indore, where he extracted reverse swing and troubled Australian bowlers.
