Off-spinner Ravi Ashwin reckoned that Faf du Plessis’ price in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction is expected to go through the roof. Back in the 2018 edition, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) roped du Plessis in at a price of INR 1.6 crores, and Ashwin felt that his price will be much higher this time around.

Du Plessis, who’s currently representing the Comilla Victorians in the 2022 Bangladesh Premier League, has set himself a base price of INR 2 crore for the IPL mega auction. Despite being in his late 30s, Ashwin said that the franchises will be looking to secure his services in the auction to take place on February 12 and 13 in Bengaluru.

Faf du Plessis will have a great demand: Ravi Ashwin

“Last time around, CSK stole Faf for 1.5 crores. But this time, I don’t see that type of steal happening. CSK fans will have him on their wish list. If CSK wants to buy Du Plessis this time, they should be ready to spend a lot more than they did last time. Faf du Plessis will have a great demand in my opinion. Faf will be sought after by most teams,” Ashwin said.

Last season, du Plessis, tantalizingly, missed out on bagging the Orange Cap after finishing second in the list of leading run-scorers in the tournament. In 16 matches, the 37-year-old scored 633 runs at an average of 45.21 and a strike rate of 138.20. Having scored six half-centuries, Du Plessis gave an account of the damage he can do.

He stayed two runs shy of Ruturaj Gaikwad, who got the Orange Cap with 635 runs at an average of 45.35. Du Plessis is in pretty good form, as he recently played an unbeaten 83-run knock against Naeem Islam’s Chattogram Challengers at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium.

Du Plessis has played a total of 100 IPL matches in which he has scored, 2935 runs at an average of 34.94 and a strike rate of 131.09. The fact that he notched 22 half-centuries showed how consistent he was with the bat in hand. Moreover, he played a sparkling 86-run knock against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the final of the 2021 IPL in Dubai.
