‘You should never push a player’- Danish Kaneria reveals why KL Rahul should not have been picked in the India squad for the Asia Cup 2022

Danish Kaneria, who played as a leg-spinner for Pakistan in the past, believes that KL Rahul‘s return to the Indian team for the 2022 Asia Cup was done too quickly. After the conclusion of the IPL 2022 season, the 30-year-old had an injury to his groin, and he has been out ever since.

Rahul was scheduled to make his return in the Twenty20 International series against West Indies, but it didn’t happen either since he tested positive for COVID-19. The management of the team has made it abundantly obvious that KL Rahul would play a significant role in their strategy for the Twenty20 World Cup by naming him the vice-captain for the Asia Cup.

What did Danish Kaneria say?

On the other hand, Danish Kaneria explained why Rahul ought to have taken a little bit of extra time to come back into full flow in a video that was uploaded to his channel on YouTube.

He said: “Even though Rahul hasn’t competed in any international cricket for quite some time, the selectors decided to go with him rather than Shreyas Iyer, Shubman Gill, or Sanju Samson, all of whom were regularly competing. You should never push a player back into the starting lineup once they have recovered from an injury. Because he is such a vital player for India in the Twenty20 World Cup, he should have been given a little more time to adjust to playing with the squad.”

Recently, Danish Kaneria has been quite outspoken about how costly Avesh Khan has been for India while playing Twenty20 Internationals. Avesh, let up a lot of runs during the series, even though he was named Player of the Match in the fourth Twenty20 international played against the West Indies.

The 41-year-old feels that having an experienced bowler like Mohammad Shami in Team India as the third pacer would have been ideal, especially considering that Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Arshdeep Singh are likely to be included in the starting XI.
