Ambati Rayudu retired from international cricketer after being dropped from the 2019 WC squad. When he was not even considered as a replacement option, he took this decision. A few players might take a similar call in the next few weeks. With the T20 franchise leagues offering a good career path, it won’t make a difference for many players to quit playing for their nation. Here, we take a look at the list of two English cricketers dropped for the ODI World Cup who might retire soon.

1) Jason Roy

Jason Roy has already hinted at this by opting out of the Ireland ODI series. He was initially picked for the 2023 ODI World Cup. However, in the final squad, Harry Brook replaced him. One of the best openers of this era, Roy was instrumental in England’s campaign back in 2019.

A few months ago, there were rumours that Roy would sign a long-term franchise contract with one of the Indian-based groups. However, the rumours were denied by Roy. Now, it would make sense for Roy to take up a similar deal. The opening slots in the England Team will now be filled by the youngsters and opportunities could further become scarce for him. Hence, he could take this decision.

2) Chris Jordan

Chris Jordan is one of the English cricketers dropped for the ODI World Cup who might retire soon. At least from ODIs, Jordan could retire because the doors seem shut for him.

Even in T20Is, if he does not show consistency, the likes of Gus Atkinson are ready to take over. Unlike Roy, Jordan does not have great popularity in the T20 leagues. That said, he is an experienced man and the 34-year-old’s tricks at the death are still rated highly by many. Therefore, he is also a part of this list.
