6 Worst signings by Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL history

Share the post

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have been among the finest and consistent sides in the Indian Premier League’s history (IPL). They won the IPL title in 2016 and have qualified for the playoffs in every edition since. They focus on their core squad and rotate other individuals on a regular basis to give variation to their arsenal. Hyderabad’s main worry over the years has been finding a reliable middle-order batter, and they’ve had the interesting/debatable signings over the years. They have over-purchased a number of players to fill that role. But, most of them haven’t delivered as per their expectations.

On that note, let’s take a look at the six worst signings by Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL history.

#1. Yuvraj Singh

Yuvraj Singh has been one of the veterans in the T20 internationals, playing a major role in India’s T20 World Cup win in 2007. However, he hasn’t been able to perform the same way in the IPL and has been rotated to multiple franchises due to his mediocre performances.

SRH roped in him ahead of the 2016 IPL for INR 7 CR in hopes of a strong all-round performance.  Instead, Yuvraj could only manage 488 runs and a single wicket in 22 matches over two seasons for Hyderabad and thus was released after IPL 2017.

#2. Deepak Hooda

Sunrisers Hyderabad roped in the services of Deepak Hooda for INR 4.20 CR ahead of IPL 2016. Hooda is known for his explosive batting down the order and handy off-spin bowling.

SRH bought him in the side to add firepower in the lower order, but unfortunately, Hooda could only manage 373 runs in 47 matches over four seasons from 2016-2019. Due to his dismal run, he was released by the SRH management ahead of the 2020 IPL.

#3. Yusuf Pathan

Yusuf Pathan has been one of the best hard-hitting players in T20 cricket and has shown that on numerous occasions. After playing his trade for Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders, where he won three titles, he was bought in by SRH ahead of the 2018 IPL for INR 2.8 CR.

However, he wasn’t able to replicate his performances and had a poor run for SRH over two seasons. In 25 matches, Yusuf was only able to score 300 runs which was way below what was expected of him and which is why he makes it to the list of the worst signings by Sunrisers Hyderabad.#4. KL Rahul

One of the current best T20 players around world cricket, KL Rahul was a part of the SRH squad in 2014 and 2015. Hyderabad roped in the services of Rahul for INR 1 CR after his exploits in domestic cricket.

However, Rahul didn’t live up to his expectations, as he only managed 308 runs from 20 matches across two seasons. He was released after the 2015 IPL and now is one of the most dangerous batters in T20 cricket.

#5. Hanuma Vihari

Hanuma Vihari is a dependable batter who is known for holding the crease from one end. Not a natural T20 player, he was bought in by SRH ahead of the 2013 IPL for a mere price of INR 8 lakhs. He missed the 2014 season, but was once again roped in by Hyderabad for INR 10 lakhs in the 2015 IPL.

Over two seasons, Vihari has represented SRH in 25 matches and has only managed to score 304 runs. His dismal run saw him get released off the side and has featured in IPL only once after that.

#6. Shreevats Goswami

Sunrisers Hyderabad roped in Shreevats Goswami for INR 1 CR ahead of the 2018 IPL. He was bought with the purpose of filling in the position of an Indian wicket-keeper who can play quickly.

Unfortunately, Goswami was unable to live up to his expectations as he only managed to score 52 runs in 8 matches despite opening the batting in a few of them.
