5 players who deserved a bigger salary at IPL 2023 Auctions

IPL Auction dynamics are such that a player’s quality cannot always be equated to his final bid. Most of the signings are made based on the requirements of a team. In this context, a few players go for a less expensive price although they are talented cricketers. On that note, here, we take a look at five players who deserved a bigger salary at IPL 2023 Auctions that ended recently in Kochi.

1) Phil Salt – INR 2 Cr (Delhi Capitals)

Phil Salt is one of the best T20 batters in England right now. The Wales-born cricketer was part of the England Team that recently won the 2022 T20 World Cup. While Harry Brook went for over INR 10 Cr, Phil Salt was just sold at his base price.

It was mainly because Salt’s name came later in the auctions. Also, Delhi Capitals might not be able to give him a chance with the likes of David Warner, Rilee Rossouw and Mitchell Marsh in the top order. It needs to be seen how the player’s campaign would go about in IPL 2023.

2) N Jagadeesan – INR 0.9 Cr (Kolkata Knight Riders)

N Jagadeesan is one of the players who deserved a bigger salary at IPL 2023 Auctions. The Tamil Nadu opener was in top form in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He even made the highest List A score in the history of the game. Even in the Ranji Trophy, the former CSK cricketer has done well.

Considering he is also a genuine wicket-keeper, many expected him to fetch big bucks. However, N Jagadeesan’s bid even did not cross INR 1 Cr. He deserved more than this. Nevertheless, unlike in CSK, this time, he could get a few games in the playing XI.

3) Odean Smith – INR 0.5 Cr (Gujarat Titans)

Yes, Odean Smith did not do well in the IPL last season. However, he is still a quality T20 cricketer and just the kind of player each T20 team would need.

The West Indian all-rounder can bowl quickly and he is someone who can score some big hits in the lower order. Despite these factors, Odean went just at his base price. Maybe, the ‘Impact Player’ rule could have reduced the significance of players like Odean.

4) Sanvir Singh – INR 0.2 Cr (Sunrisers Hyderabad)

Sanvir Singh is also one of the players who deserved a bigger salary at IPL 2023 Auctions. Not many are aware but Sanvir was one of the best all-rounders in the recent Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Most importantly, he is a pace bowling all-rounder and this is one profile to which usually franchises allocate a lot of cash.

However, barring SRH, no other team was interested in Sanvir. The Punjab cricketer is still young and has the potential to achieve a lot. Amidst the international players, he also has the chance to develop himself. He did deserve better pay but nevertheless, it could still happen in the future.

5) Akeal Hosein – INR 1 Cr (Sunrisers Hyderabad)

Akeal Hosein is arguably one of the best T20 spinners in the game right now. Along with this, he is also a good option in the lower order to smack some quick runs.

However, the all-rounder just went for his base price. SRH will consider themselves really lucky for getting Akeal quickly. While Adil Rashid will be the preferred overseas spinner, SRH can add depth to the batting if they use the West Indian player.
