While he was overjoyed to have scored the quickest double-hundred in ODI history, Ishan Kishan was disappointed that he had not been able to become the first triple-centurion in the format.

The 24-year-old, in just his 10th ODI, showed courageous batting as he needed only 126 balls to reach the milestone, breaking Chris Gayle’s record for the quickest (138 balls) double century in the format. India scored an impressive 409 for 8 in their innings. In the 36th over of India’s innings, got out for 210.

The left-handed batsman from Jharkhand joined an exclusive club, becoming just the fourth Indian batter in history to reach 200. Indian captain Rohit Sharma is the only player to have done it three times; the other two players to do so are Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag.

Kishan’s record-breaking performance occurred as he was batting alongside India’s superstar Virat Kohli, whom Kishan praised for helping “cool him down” as he was closing in on his first hundred.

“I got out with 15 (14.1) overs left. I could have got 300 also,” Kishan told the broadcasters ‘SonyLiv’ at the innings break.

“I am blessed to hear my name between such legends. The wicket was too good to bat on. My intent was very clear — if the ball is there, I’ll go for it,” he revealed about his strategy.

Tendulkar achieved the first-ever double century in a men’s One-Day International. In February of 2010, he reached 200 runs without being dismissed against South Africa off 147 balls. In the time since, Sehwag has reached the milestone once, while Rohit has accomplished it three times. In November 2014, against Sri Lanka, Rohit scored a record-breaking 264 runs off 173 balls in an ODI match.

On Saturday, with Rohit out with an injury, Kishan started the batting alongside Shikhar Dhawan. Dhawan was out in the fifth over for only three runs, but Kishan and Kohli went at the bowlers thereafter. In the end, he finished with 10 sixes and 24 fours.
