Usually, the spinners are expected to have a role in the middle overs. While that is still there, we have recently seen the trend changing. We have seen spinners at the death and at times, squads go completely pace in the middle overs. A few teams could be more inclined towards this strategy in IPL 2024. Here, we take a look at three teams that might use more pacers than spinners in the middle overs in IPL 2024.
1) Royal Challengers Bangalore
RCB has one of the weakest spin attacks for IPL 2024. In the first place, the franchise may not be able to afford to have spinners rule the middle overs because they lack the resources to control this phase.
On the other hand, if you take a look at RCB’s hirings at the auctions, the focus was on enforcers and hit-the-deck bowlers. The likes of Alzarri Joseph and Lockie Ferguson could bowl a lot during this phase.
2) Mumbai Indians
MI had the opportunity to improve the spin attack. However, they are now going with the same attack that they had in IPL 2023. It is not sure if Piyush Chawla will turn up with the same form in IPL 2024.
Moreover, MI has some serious pacers who can excel during this phase of the game. The likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Akash Madhwal, Gerald Coetzee and Nuwan Thushara could all do well while operating in the middle overs.
3) Punjab Kings
Punjab Kings is one of the teams that might use more pacers than spinners in the middle overs in IPL 2024. PBKS has a better pace attack compared to their spin attack.
Also, the pacers are more suited to bowling in the middle overs. Both Kagiso Rabada and Nathan Ellis can hit the deck hard while someone like Harshal Patel can be used to contain run-scoring.
