3 reasons why Suryakumar Yadav could open against Australia if Gill gets ruled out

Shubman Gill’s situation does not look bright for the Australia game. Ishan Kishan is the first option that comes to mind if Gill is ruled out. However, Suryakumar Yadav could also be an interesting option. On that note, here, we take a look at three reasons why Suryakumar Yadav could open against Australia instead of Ishan Kishan if Shubman Gill gets ruled out.

1) A better complementary partner for Rohit and Virat in Chennai

The ability to play spin is not the strength these days for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Assuming Rohit’s opening partner has to cover up this, it would be a better idea for SKY to slot in at the top.

With SKY at the crease, the spinners will have to be at their best. This is because of the Mumbai cricketer’s excellent range against this type of bowling. When it comes to strike rotation, SKY ranks better than Ishan.

2) Better utilization of the field restrictions in the powerplay

SKY’s range of shots is numerous and he has the ability to tap into every part of the park. Therefore, he would be a good idea to use in the powerplay.

Rohit Sharma could lose his way at times in the powerplay. This can be better complemented by SKY, especially if he gets away from the initial burst by Mitchell Starc and others.

3) The counter for Glenn Maxwell

SKY’s excellence against right-arm off-spin is one of the reasons why Suryakumar Yadav could open against Australia instead of Ishan Kishan if Shubman Gill gets ruled out.

If Ishan is at the crease, Pat Cummins could bring Maxwell early. Maxwell is the second spinner in the side but it needs to be noted that he is a batting all-rounder. Pat will be eager to finish Maxi’s overs as early as possible. Ishan might be a good matchup for Maxwell but not the same with SKY. Therefore, this could tactically favour Team India.
