Switch-hit is a common shot for batters to surprise the bowlers. The likes of Glenn Maxwell play it very often and they are successful on most days. However, it is very rare to witness batters switching their batting hand altogether during a game. This might have an effect on their strategies and most batters don’t do it. However, some cricketers have done it in the recent past. On that note, here, we take a look at three popular cricketers who changed their batting hand during a game in recent times.

1) David Warner

The most recent player to do it is David Warner. He did it against Team India in the second ODI at Indore. The team needed some quick runs and Warner resorted to this option, especially to tackle the off-spin of R Ashwin. However, he eventually fell prey to Ashwin.

It is not the first time that Warner has done that. Even in the IPL, while playing for Delhi Capitals, Warner has brought out this surprise.

2) Joe Root

Joe Root is one of the popular cricketers who changed their batting hand during a game in recent times. Back in December last year, Root made this change and surprised many. Test cricket needs concentration and a batter doing this was a surprise.

Pakistan spinner Zahid Mahmood is a leg-break bowler and hence, Root felt that it was good to face him left-handed. Root did get some success but suffered a few scares, too. Ever since Brendon McCullum took over the Test Team, Root has been taking a lot of risks.

3) Hanuma Vihari

This was not in an international game but in a Ranji Trophy quarter-final that Vihari did. It was against Madhya Pradesh.

Vihari fractured his left forearm during the game. However, he had to come to the crease to score some useful runs for his side. Hence, he came to bat as a left-handed batter so that he could avoid exposing his left forearm, which had to be done if he was batting right-handed.
