It will be interesting to see the way forward for Mumbai Indians. They could make a lot of changes or trust their current lot. Nevertheless, with the Mega Auctions likely to happen, MI will be forced to make some changes. On that note, here, we take a look at the list of three players MI could forcibly release before IPL 2025 if teams are allowed only 3 retentions.
1) Rohit Sharma
If only three players are allowed to be retained, MI might seriously consider retaining Rohit Sharma. This is despite the backlash the management will face if Rohit turns up for another team in IPL 2025.
However, considering his age and form, MI might be right from a cricketing perspective to release Rohit. They could invest in a younger opener who could the team in the future.
2) Hardik Pandya
Hardik Pandya is one of the players MI could forcibly release before IPL 2025 if teams are allowed only 3 retentions. Fans form an important part of the IPL. The management must ensure that they are pleased most of the time.
Jasprit Bumrah and Suryakumar Yadav are sure to be retained. The third retention must ideally be Hardik Pandya. However, if the fans are not happy, MI might consider releasing Hardik. Bumrah could step in as the skipper and MI might target another all-rounder in the auctions.
3) Ishan Kishan
Despite his inconsistency, Mumbai Indians would have retained Ishan if there are more retentions allowed. There are very few players who offer what Ishan does. There are many franchises which struggle to have a proper keeper.
But, in Ishan, the team gets a solid keeper and also a left-handed batter. He is young and shall improve further. It is just that he needs to be backed right now. However, if lesser retentions are there, MI will have to release the cricketer.
