It is surprising that India is not looking at backup openers for Tests at the moment. Rohit Sharma is in the last few years and it is always good to have a ready backup in the case of an injury. While KL Rahul and Shubman Gill offer good backup choices, it is better to have someone with a clear role. On that note, here, we take a look at the list of three players India must groom as the backup opener in Tests.
1) B Sai Sudharsan
B Sai Sudharsan is the ideal candidate to become the next Test opener after Rohit Sharma retires. The player is also trying hard to secure a place in the Test side.
Already, he has featured in a few County stints. He has also done well in some games. With this experience under his belt, the management would consider him as a ready option.
2) Ruturaj Gaikwad
Ruturaj Gaikwad is one of the players India must groom as the backup opener in Tests. It is inevitable before Ruturaj Gaikwad cements his spot in the Indian XI in at least one format. The fact that the management is looking at him as a captain is proof that Ruturaj does feature in a strong plan by the stakeholders.
He would be the ideal man to be a backup opener for Team India. He is experienced and is capable of handling a job in all formats. His technique is strong and would be very much capable of doing a good job in the SENA nations.
3) Yash Dubey
Yash Dubey has been doing well on the domestic circuit for a while now. He is 25 now and has some time to develop.
It is always good if you back someone who does well in the Ranji Trophy. Yash has been a part of some successful sides and if he does well for India A, he deserves a chance.
