It will be the end of the careers of many after the 2023 ODI World Cup. While a few might continue as freelance cricketers, a few might take up coaching. Also, it may not be a surprise if some players explore the idea of a player-coach. We have seen this before in the game. On that note, here, we take a look at three players in the 2023 ODI World Cup who could become coaches soon.
1) Mohammad Nabi
Nabi may not have had a memorable outing as a cricketer in the 2023 ODI World Cup. However, as a team, Afghanistan was brilliant. They finished above England, who were the defending champions. The next target for the Afghans would be the 2024 T20 World Cup.
If you take a look at the Afghanistan support staff, it is fairly younger compared to the other teams. In fact, the bowling coach is younger than Nabi. The all-rounder might take up a coaching role in the future, and it won’t be a surprise if he is an assistant coach and a player in the 2024 T20 WC.
2) Roelof van der Merwe
Roelof van der Merwe is a part of this list of players in the 2023 ODI World Cup who could become coaches soon. The all-rounder was selected only after the Netherlands reached the tournament.
He had a good run, picking some crucial wickets, including that of Virat Kohli. While he still has some playing assignments, he could take up coaching after retirement.
3) Wesley Barresi
The top-order batter came back from retirement a few months ago. His experience helped the Netherlands to qualify for the World Cup.
Barresi has already explored coaching as an option. Hence, it is obvious that the player will take it up soon. In fact, he might become an assistant coach at the Netherlands camp, itself.
