Dunith Wellalage wreaked havoc in the Indian batting line-up in the Asia Cup. He took a five-wicket haul, including the wickets of India’s premier batters. Surely, a few IPL franchises would eye the 20-year-old all-rounder, who has tremendous potential. On that note, here, we take a look at the list of three franchises that can target Dunith Wellalage for IPL 2024.
1) Royal Challengers Bangalore
RCB struggled in their spin department last season. While Wanindu Hasaranga and Karn Sharma were inconsistent, Shahbaz Ahmed never came to the party.
Every team needs to have a strong left-arm off-spinner. In matchups, this plays an important role. RCB might also want to have a good backup for Hasaranga, who can be hot-and-cold at times. In this regard, a player like Dunith would add value to the outfit.
2) Sunrisers Hyderabad
Sunrisers Hyderabad is one of the franchises that can target Dunith Wellalage for IPL 2024. Like RCB, SRH, too, had a mediocre outing when it came to the spin department in IPL 2023.
To address this, they can have a player like Dunith Wellalage in the setup. The likes of Adil Rashid have not got going in the IPL. SRH can move on and invest in someone like Dunith, who also has a high ceiling as an all-rounder.
3) Punjab Kings
Punjab Kings has a solid base when it comes to the spin department. They have Rahul Chahar leading the group with Harpreet Brar also in the mix. However, Brar has not fired often, which has left the franchise wanting to invest in a new spinner next season.
Dunith Wellalage will occupy an overseas spot but he might just be worth it. He would add variety to the bowling attack, while also improving the batting depth, an issue that has been present with the Punjab Kings for a while now.
