The 2011 ODI World Cup is a fine memory for the fans of cricket, especially in India. While the campaign ended in a trophy for India after 28 years, it also ended the streak for Australia. A lot has changed since then. Now, T20 leagues play an important role. Interestingly, a few individuals who were captains in that edition are now coaches in the IPL. Here, we take a look at three cricketers who were captains in the 2011 ODI World Cup and are IPL Head Coaches right now.
1) Kumar Sangakkara – Rajasthan Royals
Kumar Sangakkara was the skipper of the Sri Lankan team that reached the finals of the tournament. It was a good show by the team but India was the better squad on the day.
At the moment, Kumar holds an important role in RR. He was earlier the Director of Cricket and recently took up the role of Head Coach, too. It was not a great start, though. There are rumours that he could be replaced before the next season.
2) Ricky Ponting – Delhi Capitals
Ricky Ponting is a part of this list of cricketers who were captains in the 2011 ODI World Cup and are now IPL Head Coaches. After three editions, Australia missed the trophy in 2011. It was a fine effort by Yuvraj Singh that denied the trophy to the Aussies.
Ponting is one of the greatest skippers that the game has seen. He has also developed into a fine coach. Currently, he is at the helm of affairs at DC.
3) Daniel Vettori – Sunrisers Hyderabad
One of the finest skippers that New Zealand has seen is Daniel Vettori. He silently went about his business and was effective at it.
After the underwhelming stint as a coach at RCB, Vettori has now got another chance in the IPL. He will be the Head Coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad from IPL 2024.
