Unless you have won the World Cup or done something extraordinary, captains usually don’t get more than one chance to lead the country at a World Cup. However, it needs to be noted that the ODI format itself is on the decline now. Not much effort could be spent on this format and hence, a few teams might stick with a captain, if he or she is decent. On that note, Here, we take a look at three captains in the 2023 ODI WC who might also be captains in the 2027 ODI World Cup.
1) Babar Azam (Pakistan)
The likes of Shaheen Afridi and Shadab Khan could be in contention. However, in the ODI format, it will be a monumental decision for the board to replace Babar Azam.
He is an elite cricketer and has not done badly in the role of captain. Unless the captaincy is putting pressure on him as a batter, it is unlikely that he will have to leave the role.
2) Scott Edwards (Netherlands)
Scott Edwards is one of the captains in the 2023 ODI WC who might also be captains in the 2027 ODI World Cup. The Netherlands qualifying for the 2023 ODI World Cup is a story in itself. Assuming they qualify for the next edition, they might have the same skipper.
Scott Edwards is only 27 years old and also holds an important role as a player. Hence, he is in line to remain as the skipper for the next few years, as well.
3) Hashmatullah Shahidi (Afghanistan)
Not many know much about Shahidi, who is the skipper of Afghanistan. Rashid Khan might prioritize T20Is in future. Hence, if Shahidi can keep his consistency as a player, he might still be the skipper.
However, it needs to be noted that a lot of youngsters are coming through. There will be a lot of competition but considering his age, he still stands a chance to lead the Afghans in 2027.
