Sri Lankan national cricket team used to be a formidable force to be reckoned with in international cricket. Be it ICC, ACC or bilateral events, they had the guile and determination to win games.

However, after legendary players of the team including Muttiah Muralitharan, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Chaminda Vaas, Marvan Atapattu, Tillakaratne Dilshan and others retired from the game, Sri Lanka struggled to produce a spark as a team.

For the record, Sri Lanka will be playing an ODI World Cup Qualifier for the first time in 44 years, which goes to show how the mighty have fallen. So, they failed to grab hold of the eighth spot in the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League table.

This comes after they succumbed to a terrible defeat against New Zealand in the third ODI at Hamilton. Batting first, the Lankans were crumbled to a mere 157 in 41.3 overs. The likes of Matt Henry, Shipley and Daryl Mitchell took three wickets apiece.

In response, New Zealand chased down the target in 32.5 overs. They won the game by six wickets. Lahiru Kumara took two wickets to his name for Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka will have to fly to Zimbabwe in June to compete in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier, as they will look to secure their spot in the 2023 edition of the tournament later this year.
