It is not a surprise that the likes of Faf du Plessis and Shikhar Dhawan might be released before the IPL 2025 Auctions. They are on the wrong side of the age and the teams may not be able to afford to retain them now. However, depending on the dynamics of retention, a few franchises will have to take some tough decisions. On that note, here, we take a look at the list of two teams that could shockingly release their captains before IPL 2025 Mega Auctions.
1) Lucknow Super Giants – KL Rahul
Based on what happened in IPL 2024, KL Rahul could be on his way out of the franchise. A few reports suggest that the owners of LSG have decided to release him. However, that would be a shocking decision.
Despite his recent poor run, it needs to be noted that KL Rahul is still one of the best batters in the league. On top of this, he is a good wicket-keeper and a decent captain. He can also bat in the middle-order if needed and he still has the age to serve the franchise for a few more years. It is hard to get a player like this in the market and LSG must think all angles before they release him.
2) Sunrisers Hyderabad – Pat Cummins
SRH is one of the teams that could shockingly release their captains before IPL 2025 Mega Auctions. It all depends on how many players would be available for retentions before the auctions. If the number is near three, SRH might have to release Pat Cummins.
SRH has better players available for retention in the team. Moreover, it is not sure if Pat will be available for every season. Anyways, as a T20 bowler, he is yet to hit his peak. Considering his role as an all-format bowler, T20s might be his least priority.
