The squad of Mumbai Indians under Mahela Jayawardene was fool-proof. Even if some cricketers were not established, they flourished under the Sri Lankan Head Coach. Now, he is back as the Head Coach of Mumbai Indians. Surely, a few players will develop under him and even some of the former cricketers who played under him could come back to MI. On that note, here, we take a look at the list of two struggling former Mumbai Indians cricketers whom Mahela Jayawardene can target for IPL 2025.
1) Rahul Chahar
Ever since he left Mumbai Indians, it has not been going well for Rahul Chahar. Once considered as the future leg-spinner for India, he is now far below in the pecking order. Nevertheless, IPL 2024 was slightly better and a lot would depend on his next IPL franchise.
On the other hand, MI has not had a reliable leg-spinner after Rahul Chahar left the franchise. Piyush Chawla has only been adequate and not been extra-ordinary. Since he has already worked with him, Mahela could consider signing Rahul. He could also come at a cheap price because his stocks are not of great value right now.
2) Anukul Roy
Anukul Roy is one of the struggling former Mumbai Indians cricketers whom Mahela Jayawardene can target for IPL 2025. While his stints at MI were mainly of a substitute fielder, there were many expectations from Anukul as an all-rounder. Yes, he did win IPL 2024 but as a player, he did not progress.
While MI could target Krunal Pandya, he may not be available at a low fee. Hence, Mahela can line-up Anukul as an alternate option. He already has the experience needed at the domestic level. It is just about going to the next level in his career, which can happen at MI.
