Devon Conway is set to miss a huge chunk of IPL 2024. It won’t be a surprise if he is ruled out of the tournament completely. Chennai Super Kings would then have an issue at the top of the order. While Rachin Ravindra is available as the ready backup, the likes of Ajinkya Rahane are also useful in this regard. However, CSK must also have some other options ready so that they are prepared for the worst case. On that note, here, we take a look at two players who could surprisingly open the batting for CSK in IPL 2024.
1) Moeen Ali
A few years ago, Moeen Ali used to open regularly in the T20 format. In fact, when he played for RCB, he walked out to open the batting on one or two occasions. In the last two seasons, Moeen Ali has not been able to contribute well for CSK.
One of the main reasons has been that he is not getting regular game time at No.3. Considering he is good against both pacers and the spinners, he can be an option for the side as an opener. With him in the side, one spin option is also covered.
2) Daryl Mitchell
Daryl Mitchell is one of the players who could surprisingly open the batting for CSK in IPL 2024. It needs to be noted that Daryl Mitchell actually started his career as an opener. Hence, opening the batting is not new for the New Zealand cricketer.
Currently, he is slated to come in at No.4 or No.5. This would delay the entry point for Ravindra Jadeja and MS Dhoni. To avoid this, CSK could consider having Mitchell open the batting for CSK. This would beef up the top-order, making CSK very dangerous in the powerplay. If the player succeeds, CSK would have won half the battle in the first 10 overs.
