Usually, it is desired that a Head Coach of a national team must have some playing experience at the highest level. This is required to understand the expectations from a player’s point of view. That said, in the past, we have seen coaches without this experience doing well. Along similar lines, we have some teams in the upcoming World Cup with a Head Coach who does not have an international cap. Here, we take a look at two Head Coaches in the 2023 ODI World Cup who have not played a single international game in their careers.

1) Rob Walter – South Africa

Rob Walter recently came in as the Head Coach of South Africa. He replaced Mark Boucher, who moved to the Mumbai Indians after the 2022 ODI World Cup.

Let alone international experience, there is no record of domestic experience, as well, for Rob. That said, as a coach, he has done well, winning trophies in various countries. He has also been an assistant coach in the Indian Premier League. He now has a good team for the 2023 ODI World Cup. If Rob can drill his philosophy into the players, the team has an opportunity to go all the way.

2) Matthew Mott – England

Matthew Mott is one of the Head Coaches in the 2023 ODI World Cup who have not played a single international game in their career. While he has played a lot of domestic games, he never played for Australia.

It was his success with the Australian women’s team that gave Matthew a chance to become the white-ball coach of England. He almost delivered instantly, with the 2022 T20 World Cup. The team has not started the ODI World Cup on a good note. However, England is a champion side and is likely to make a strong comeback in the next games.
